Wandsworth Common
Playground
A proposal for a natural playscape for Wandsworth Council. Lady Allen Adventure Playground sits alongside the site. We wanted to take inspiration form some of her theories in play design - in particular her attitude to risk.
We wanted at the centre of the deign to be the highest possible (4m) free climb without barriers. This could be achieved with a web system of ropes that create a highly challenging risky climb but with an obstructed safe fall.
A live build pavilion project with Chelsea College of Arts Spatial Design students, installed at the Tate Britain.
Thamesmead
2020 - 2024
A landscape refurbishment project led while working with muf architecture/art.
Together with local residents, we shaped the design for a £5 million public realm project within Thamesmead's existing estate. The project aimed to create closer relationships to nature through the refurbishment of existing infrastructure and ecology.
We invested in an extensive engagement programme, working for over 2 years with community stakeholders. Our approach involved a variety of actions, from small workshops with specific groups to large on-site testing events. A paid resident group, Community Design Collective, worked alongside us, first training in design and then becoming an integral part of both client and design team.
The final scheme involves a string of repairs, refurbishments and interventions, including a dance floor in an orchard, a planted playground and an outdoor kitchen. The central terrace uses 30 large carved granite stones reclaimed from the Thames embankment wall in Westminster.
